Oct 21, 2008 | DIY: Music for TV Commercials

On Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30PM, IAR will host a special Do It Yourself event for IAR students and friends. Wendell Hanes, a successful music producer and composer for television commercials, will deliver a seminar to IAR students and invited guests. Wendell has created music for over 600 commercials, themes and promos for almost every possible network including MTV, VH1, ESPN, ABC, CBS, NBC, The Discovery Channel, HBO and Showtime. Wendell is also the author of the book “Making 30 Grand in 30 Seconds: Producing Music for Commercials!” and Owner and Executive Producer for Volition Sound Branding.

Topics Wendell will cover include:

- Creating music for film
- Scoring structure and technique
- Sound design and sound priority in your mix
- Making money making music

This fall, you’re invited on Saturday, September 6th, between 1:00-4:00pm to one of IAR’s best events, the Fall Open House. Our format gives you a broad selection of demos to attend at your convenience. You will also be able to meet with Admissions and other staff to discuss IAR’s Audio Recording and Production program, and you will become a possible raffle winner.

Special Guest HOT97 DJ Bobby Trends will run a break out session on the music business. Attend exciting presentations including a hands-on mixing session where you will be in front of a Yamaha DAW, an audio post-production demo, and a chance to join in the live recording of a band in IAR’s state-of-the art studio suite. You can join an Apple Computer session on Garage Band/podcasting, and IARecords will host performances by our Next Level New Artist Search participants.

IAR and our event partners Apple Inc, Disc Makers and HOT 97FM will be contributing to a raffle of valuable gifts. If you are considering enrolling at IAR, all you need is a high school diploma and a burning desire to succeed in the music business. On Tuesday, July 22nd @ 6:30pm, IAR will host a special Do It Yourself event for IAR students and friends. Two music industry executives with decades of experience will deliver a seminar on the business of music in today’s world. Charles and Larry have worked with such artists as The Neville Brothers, R. Kelly, Rihanna, and Michael Jackson. They’ll speak about a number of topics including what it takes to get started in the industry and creative rights.

Jul 02, 2008 | Summer Audio For Picture Awards

The Summer Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival will be held on Wednesday, July 2nd at 6:30pm. The student-only festival showcases audio/video projects from IAR students. Students were required to take a pre-existing video of their choice and recreate all sound effects, dialog, musical scores, and foley. The projects are limited to three categories based on time length: Short Format, Medium Format, and Long Format.


Don’t miss out on the fun and cheer for your favorite projects. It will be held in Room 21/21A.

On Thursday, June 26th, current IAR students and their guests will have the opportunity to unlock the secrets of REASON, the powerful music production program, and learn to do more with it than thought possible (yep, even REASON ADAPTED has hidden depths!)

Faculty member Dana McCurdy will show how to CONQUER THE AUDIO WORLD using this one great program and a creative imagination!

Dana will explore such myriad topics as:

-‘Back of the rack’ and creative patching techniques
-“New school” sounds for REASON’s “old school” Subtractor synthesizer
-Unleashing the power of REASON’S automation effects

May 21, 2008 | Do It Yourself: Ableton Live Demo/Tutorial

Topic: Producing and Performing Live with your Computer
IAR will host a special DIY event with the music software company Ableton. IAR students will be given a demo including a performance of the popular and exciting music production software Ableton Live 7.

Ableton Live 7 provides a new way of creating, producing and performing music live with a computer. Ableton with the help of IAR student volunteer musicians* will take students through the basics of Ableton Live 7:


- Sketching out song ideas on a computer
- Recording and manipulating audio ‘on the fly’
- Beat-making in Ableton Live 7
- How to DJ with a laptop using Ableton Live 7

This DIY is being brought to you by IAR, Ableton and Tekserve, who will be offering special event-only pricing for attending students.

  • IAR STUDENTS: Want use Ableton and play your music at this event? Ableton will be demonstrating their software with the help of one or two guitarists/ keyboardists. Apr 29, 2008 | DO IT YOURSELF: DJ Workshop

On Tuesday, April 29th, IAR alumnus and professional DJ Nicholas Bivona a.k.a. DJ React will provide students with an in-depth clinic in DJing. Learn tricks of the trade for DJing live events and for broadcast including the use of turntables, mixers and the popular DJ tool Serato. If you’ve ever thought about DJing or want to hone your craft, this is a must-attend-event.

It will be held in Room 21/21A at 6:15pm and make sure to sign up for the event at the Front Desk on Level 3.

Apr 15, 2008 | NEXT LEVEL 6 Competition

IAR is set to host its NEXT LEVEL 6 Competition at Arlene’s Grocery on Tuesday, April 15th at 7:00PM. The popular event will showcase IAR student musicians who submitted their material and were selected to compete for a packed venue of their peers and a great prize. The winner will be determined by audience votes, so come out and support your favorite IAR student artists and bands. Tickets are free and only available by E-mail. Send an email to Tickets@iar.edu to reserve your spot and please include your name, your guest’s name, and phone number in the E-mail. Only 2 tickets will be allotted per E-mail. Open to all ages and the public.

On Thursday, March 27th at 6:15pm, current IAR students will have the opportunity to learn how to build their own home studio. Topics such as acoustics, equipment, and wiring will be covered and, of course, how budget affects the studio make-up. Understand the costs and benefits of managing your own studio whether it’s for personal or professional use.

Come prepared with pen/paper and questions, because you will not want to miss a thing.
