The Summer Audio for Picture (AFP) Awards Festival will be held on Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30pm. The student-only festival showcases audio/video projects from IAR students. Students were required to take a pre-existing video of their choice and recreate all sound effects, dialog, musical scores, and foley.
Don’t miss out on the fun and cheer for your favorite projects. It will be held in Room 21/21A.

The popular event will showcase IAR student musicians who submitted their material and were selected to compete on-stage in a packed venue of their peers. What: Music Theory Essentials for the Musician and Producer

On Wednesday, April 29th, current IAR students will be able to sit down with IAR instructor Justin Balch and receive a tutorial in Music Theory as it applies to today’s Musician and Producer. Put plainly, if you want to produce music, the more you know about how songs are put together, the better. Whether you use sheet music and real instruments or a MIDI keyboard and software synthesizers, it’s essential to be able to communicate with musicians and engineers regarding what you hear in the speakers. Justin will divide the seminar into 3 parts:
1.) Basic Music Theory
- Harmonic and Rhythmic Notation
- Chord & Scale Structure
2.) Song Form
- Examples given across multiple genres
3.) Analysis of a Song

As the economy and the audio and technology industry are changing, there are expanding employment and internship opportunities for students and recent graduates of audio and technology programs in the New York area. The panel discussion, hosted by Doron Schachter, will explore issues such as how audio and technology are integrated in their respective companies, tips for obtaining internships and employment positions, the qualifications of the current audio and technology program students and recent graduates, and what employers are looking for in potential interns or new hires. The meeting will conclude with a question and answer period.
The evening will conclude with the raffle of a piece of audio hardware. The raffle is open only to NY area college students who are also active student members of the AES. Students may join the Section at the meeting.
In addition to AES NY Section members, all pro-audio/music technology students from NYU, Columbia, The New School University, Institute of Audio Research, City College of New York, New York City College of Technology, etc., plus members of NY’s live sound community are invited to attend.

What: Tips for the REASON Power User (Part II)

On Tuesday, February 3rd, IAR students will be able to continue to delve into REASON, the powerful music production program. PART I was a great success and all are encouraged to attend the follow-up seminar. In Part II of this seminar, Dana will demonstrate some of the newer and more extensive features of Reason 4.0 (the current “full” version of the program which has been available in IAR’s MIDI lab since earlier this spring).
Students will learn about advanced tricks and techniques including:
- Exporting REX files to NN-XT (for advanced mixing and processing options)
- Multi-band processing using MClass mastering effects
- Original sound programming in Thor and Malstrom synthesizers
- Advanced modulation techniques using Matrix step sequencers
- Using the Vocoder to build unique rhythmic timbres
- Creating Combinators for layered sounds and custom Macro controls
- More back panel patching techniques, including Redrum gates for doubling drum sounds and building “synth” percussion grooves
