Alumni Spotlight : Sound on Sound

We recently had Juan Bertran and Pablo Diez-Casajuana from the location sound company Sound on Set come to IAR for an alumni event discussing film sound. Juan Pablo are both IAR graduates. They sat down with Ryan Schimmenti of career services and discussed how they have achieved what they have thus far.

After graduating from IAR, Bertran and Diez-Casajuana got some money together and started Sound on Set. Juan had some experience working with film sound from the independent features he worked on while studying at IAR. Pablo took the experience that he learned working at a few studios after he graduated and applied that knowledge of diligence and client relations to their new venture. They started off taking any jobs that came in so they could do good work and network with people. After a few months of doing that, things started to pay off. They began getting commercial work. Nokia, IBM, Nike, and MTV just to name a few. When they got an opportunity to travel to Mexico to do sound for “Narco Cultura”, they jumped at the chance. The film is a documentary about narco culture and its affects in and around Mexico. “Narco Cultura” was recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival.

When they sat down Ryan for their IAR Audio Extra Wednesday Alumni Event, both Juan and Pablo were extremely open with the audience. When asked about what type of person is ideal to work in location film sound, Pablo said:“You have to know how to deal with people on a personal level. You have to be friendly. You need to be on time. If you’re not going to wake up early everyday, you are not going to work in this business. That’s just how it is.” Juan added: “Its about how you work and how you present yourself.”
