Music Production & Artist Development Program

Today, a large percentage of musicians are choosing to produce their music in a project studio environment. The Music Production and Artist Development Concentration is designed to both develop their production skills as well as provide them with the knowledge and tools to monetize their creations. It explores a range of contemporary production techniques for composing, recording, arranging, and mixing music as well as advanced techniques for tracking and overdubbing, tempo mapping, drum programming and mastering for the project studio. Students will also learn about the disciplines and demands of being a musician, defining an artistic direction and sound, writing and recording your music, creating an individual and realistic artistic and business plan., working with investors and crowdfunding, branding, and marketing and promotion in an ever-changing pop music environment. This concentration covers the theory, content and exam associated with the Pro Tools 210M Operator Certification.

To enroll into this program, the student must have completed a related audio program and/or must be able to demonstrate equivalent technical fundamental knowledge and skills as determined by the Institute of Audio Research.

This course builds on the concepts and skills acquired in AT135, Music Production Techniques I. MP211 explores a range of contemporary production techniques for composing, recording, arranging, and mixing music with Pro Tools. Topics include advanced techniques for tracking and overdubbing, tempo mapping, drum programming and mastering for the project studio. This course, in conjunction with RM212, prepares students to take the Pro Tools 210M certification exam.

An applied learning class that companions MP211 Music Production Techniques Lecture. Students will apply concepts covered in the lecture to improve their music production skills. The course covers a variety of styles of music and approaches to music production. Students will take the Pro Tools 210M certification exam at the conclusion of the course.

A study of modern techniques for composing music building on the fundamentals of music theory that were covered in AT135 Music Production Techniques 1. The course will focus on applicable approached to build beats, songs and film scores. Topics include analyzing song form, consonance vs dissonance, chord progression theory, writing basslines, analyzing harmony, arranging and composing for film. Concepts learned in this course will be practiced in MP214 Music Composition Lab.

An applied learning class that companions MP213 Music Composition Lecture. Students will apply the music theory that they covered in the lecture to help them compose. There will be seven writing assignments over the term and a peer review of students’ work on the last day of the course.
